Current StatusEarly December 2018, the jury has selected Topotek 1 (Zurich/Berlin) as winner of the design competition among ten finalists.

On March 26, 2019, KFAS issued a press release to officially announce the results and the winners of their international design competition. The press release and selected images of the winning design can be downloaded from the press section.

The 1st and 2nd stage submissions are displayed on this website in an online gallery.

An exhibition of all stage 1 and 2 competition entries will be in Berlin and probably in Kuwait soon. We will inform you, as soon as the dates are available.

ProcedureThe competition was organized as a restricted, international, 2-stage project competition with prior open pre-qualification procedure. The procedure maintained the competitors’ anonymity. The only language to be used in the competition documents was English.

The procedure was organized in agreement with the Union Internationale des Architectes (UIA).

ParticipantsThe competition invited professional teams from all over the world to apply for the challenge of designing the new KFAS Headquarters and Convention Center. KFAS was inviting architects from all around the world to submit their application. The invitation was aimed equally at experienced and young architects, large and small offices. The highest degree of creativity, innovation, inspiration, sensitivity and commitment was expected.

60 architects or groups of architects or architect consortia were selected to participate in the stage 1 of the competition.

The jury selected in its meeting at the end of Stage 1 10 participants for participation in Stage 2 of the competition.
Prizes and FeesThe promoter provided the net amount of USD 530,000 (net) for prizes and honoraria for services rendered.

As compensation for the expenses incurred, a budget of USD 400,000 (net) was divided in equal parts as honorarium among all competitors who advance to Stage 2 and who submitted a detailed and assessable design concept in accordance with the requirements laid down in the competition brief.

In addition, a total of USD 130,000 (net) was awarded as prizes in Stage 2 with the following distribution:

1st prize: USD 50,000.00
2nd prize: USD 35,000.00
3rd prize: USD 25,000.00
4th prize: USD 20,000.00
